How do I set up a passkey?

Written by Aksel

A passkey lets you sign in to Unloc with Face ID, Touch ID, your fingerprint or your screen lock instead of an SMS code. It takes less than a minute to set up, and it is the best way to protect your mobile keys.

Why you should use a passkey

  • Your keys are better protected. An SMS code can be intercepted, or tricked out of you by someone pretending to be Unloc. A passkey never leaves your devices and cannot be read out, forwarded or guessed.

  • Nobody can sign in with just your phone number. Once you have a passkey, Unloc stops sending SMS codes for your number. Even someone who takes over your phone number cannot get into your account.

  • Signing in is faster. No waiting for a code that arrives late or not at all. Confirm with your face or fingerprint and you are in.

  • You can stay signed in on several devices. With a passkey, signing in on a new phone or tablet no longer signs you out of the others.

Your face and fingerprint data stay on your device. Unloc never sees them.

Before you start

  • Update the Unloc app to the latest version.

  • Make sure your phone has a screen lock (Face ID, Touch ID, fingerprint or PIN).

  • Make sure a password manager is turned on, such as Apple Passwords, Google Password Manager or 1Password. This is where your passkey is stored.

Create your passkey

  1. Open the Unloc app and go to your profile, open the section titled passkeys.

  2. Tap Create a passkey.

  3. Confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, your fingerprint or your screen lock.

That's it. Your passkey now shows in the list, named after where it is stored, for example "Apple Passwords".

From now on your account is protected: Unloc will only let you sign in with your passkey, and SMS codes are no longer sent to your number.

Sign in with your passkey

  1. Open the Unloc app and enter your phone number.

  2. Tap Sign in with passkey.

  3. Confirm with your face, fingerprint or screen lock.

Signing in on a new phone

If your passkey is saved in a password manager that syncs, such as Apple Passwords or Google Password Manager, it is already waiting on your other devices that use the same account. Just sign in as usual.

If the passkey is on a different device, choose the option to use a passkey from another device and scan the QR code with the phone that has it.

Add more than one passkey

You can create several passkeys, for example one in Apple Passwords and one in 1Password. We recommend having at least two if you use devices from different ecosystems, so you always have a way in.

Remove a passkey

  1. Go to your profile, open the section titled passkeys.

  2. Tap the trash icon next to the passkey you want to remove.

  3. Confirm with any of your passkeys.

If you remove your last passkey, passkey protection is turned off and your account goes back to signing in with SMS codes. You will get a notification on your devices when this happens.

After removing a passkey in Unloc, also delete it from your password manager so it no longer shows up as a sign-in option.

I have lost my phone and cannot sign in

If your passkey is synced through your password manager, sign in on your new phone as described above.

If you have lost access to all your passkeys, contact us in the chat. We will verify your identity and then remove passkey protection from your account, so you can sign in with an SMS code again. All your devices get a notification when this happens. If you ever receive that notification without having asked for it, contact us immediately.

Once you are back in, create a new passkey right away to protect your account again.

Common questions

I no longer get an SMS code when I sign in. That is expected once you have a passkey. Tap Sign in with passkey instead.

The app does not offer me a passkey sign-in. You are probably using an old version of the app. Update Unloc from the App Store or Google Play and try again.

An old passkey still shows up when I sign in, but it does not work. It was removed from your Unloc account but is still saved in your password manager. Delete it from the password manager, and use your current passkey.

Does a passkey change how I open doors? No. Your keys, sharing and widgets work exactly as before. The passkey only changes how you sign in.
